ending 2015, ringing in 2016

bye bye xmas,bye bye 2015.
during the daytime, at 12 in the morning, all shops close down business to shoot pagara. in the centre of Paramaribo, the annual pagara estafette takes place. long strings of fire work are laid out and ignited leaving the city in smoke, loud bangs and red paper (joy?) whilst onlookers cheer each other on, drinking and dancing to the beat of local music bands and the sound truck which moves through the throngs of people standing everywhere. everywhere parties are organized and the alcohol flows freely and in abundance to accompany the need to let go of the year. we opt to stay closer to our home, due to the traffic jams which eventually happen when large pieces of the city center are cordoned off by police and the bomberos, who are vigilantly watching out for fire in the centre consisting mainly of wooden buildings

our stash for the night.

12 o'clock sharp, the sky explodes into myriads of little stars, booms and lots of smoke. happy new year..

our nochebuena, with family and friends, a tradition to get together and celebrate friendship, talk about our experiences in the past year and toast to life. pledge to be a better friend in the new year..
